Demo 1 -Interaction-Focused Couple Therapy – Wendel Ray, Ph.D.
Couples constantly exchange messages. Tone of voice, inflection and non-verbal behavior often imply meaning contradictory to overt messages. Making covert implications explicit is a technique that, when done with sensitivity, promotes healing. A method of using this fundamental of communication theory to promote change in couples therapy will be demonstrated.
Demo 2- Establishing a Focus for the Therapy in the Initial Session – Richard Fisch, M.D.
This demonstration will illustrate methods and give guidelines for formulating a focus in therapy developed at the Brief Therapy Center of the Mental Research Institute. Discussion with participants will be encouraged.
Demo 3 – Strategic Dialogue in the First Session – Giorgio Nardone, Ph.D.
In the Advanced Model, the first session has a fundamental importance because it embraces the first stage of therapy (definition of the problem, perceptive-reactive system and objectives) and the second stage of therapy (reframing and unblocking of the problem). This is carried out by strategic dialogue which will be presented in this demonstration.
Educational Objectives:
- To identify two implied relationship messages given by distressed couples.
- To describe how to use pertinent client information for formulating a focus in the therapy.
- To describe the use of strategic dialogue to reframe rigid perceptions.

Wendel Ray, PhD
Wendel A. Ray, Ph.D, is Hammond Endowed Professor of Education and Professor of Family System Theory in the Marriage & Therapy Program, at The University of Louisiana-Monroe (ULM). The former Director of the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in Palo Alto, California, as well as a former member of the MRI Brief Therapy Center, and the MRI Strategic Family Therapy Project, Dr. Ray continues to serve as an MRI Senior Research Fellow.
Richard Fisch, MD
RICHARD FISCH, MD, is a psychiatrist in private practice; consultant to the San Mateo County Juvenile Probation Department and Director of the Brief Therapy Center at the Mental Research Institute. Dr. Fisch has co-authored Change – Principles of Problem Formation and Problem Resolution and The Tactics of Change – Doing Therapy Briefly. He is recipient of awards for family therapy from AFTA and AAMFT.
Giorgio Nardone
Giorgio Nardone is the Director of the Post Graduate School of Brief Strategic Psychotherapy, located in Arezzo, Italy and of the School of Managerial Training in Communication and Strategic Problem Solving, located in Arezzo and also in Florence, Italy. He is the co-founder, along with Paul Watzlawick, of the Centro di Terapia Strategica where he conducts work as a psychotherapist, professor, and researcher.
