Over a decade has passed since the release of Sahara Swing in 2008, a groundbreaking album that showcased influences from across the African diaspora and garnered a cult following. Notably, Hermes designer Christophe Lemaire selected Karl Hector and The Malcouns’ tracks as favorites in the Now-Again catalog, featuring them in his Where Are You From anthology.
The band’s sophomore release in 2014, Unstraight Ahead, expanded their musical exploration beyond Sahara Swing. West African sounds of Ghana and Mali converged with the East African vibes of Mulatu Astatke’s Ethiopian jazz. This fusion was anchored by the groove-heavy experimentalism inspired by The Malcouns’ 70s Krautrock predecessors, including Can and other adventurous groups like Agitation Free, Ibliss, and Tomorrow’s Gift.
As producer JJ Whitefield explains, “We look to Middle Eastern funk and psychedelic fusions, and to various ethnic records for sound and phrasing.” The band’s mission is to blend the global experimentalism of Krautrock with the infectious backbeat of funk, creating a sonic experience that transcends borders and genres. Non Ex Orbis stands as a testament to their musical evolution and dedication to pushing the boundaries of sound.
