About the author
David Bean
David Bean has been trading the financial markets since 1995 starting with stocks. He transitioned to futures in 1996 with an interest in the global macro view of the markets. In 1997 he began developing automated trading systems. He currently trades futures, equities, and options and has published several books since 2010. “Algorithmic Trading Systems” is his latest book and is being published in October 2015.
Trading, researching, and publishing are David’s professional passions. His academic background includes a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1994. He worked in government and corporate wireless telecommunications from 1995-2000 and became a full-time trader in 2001.
“Algorithmic Trading Systems” is a continuation of his book “Seven Trading Systems for the S&P Futures” published in 2010. He begins his latest book by discussing additional market setups for trading gaps and shows how to trade gaps in 24 hour markets. He then develops a new pattern and shows how to trade the gap once it has been “filled” showing how this pattern can be traded on the E-mini S&P, DAX, Euro Currency, and Crude Oil. He further discusses how to modify the strategy to trade multiple contracts and how to test multiple trend filters in the same strategy. He also discusses Trading System Principles and challenges popular Wall Street axioms such as “You can’t go broke taking profits” and “Don’t let a winning trade turn into a losing trade”.
His first book, “Seven Trading Systems for the S&P Futures” was published in July 2010. In this book, seven automated trading systems are completely disclosed, showing how to day-trade gap patterns. Four different gap patterns are presented and the strategies for these patterns are designed in the Tradestation Platform. You will also learn about the PT/SL ratio, how to combine trading systems, the secrets to optimization, and more.
Testing new strategy ideas based on daily observations is part of the process of keeping up with the markets. Mr. Bean has spent numerous hours using technical analysis and doing statistical market research, testing 1000โฒs of strategies and ideas, in order to develop the current trading systems and money management methods. “You can literally test 100โฒs of trading strategies and ideas before coming up with one that can be considered valuable. When I first started developing trading strategies the opposite (flipping short entries with long entries and visa versa) of my original idea is what usually worked best, validating the contrarian market view.”
Mr. Bean truly loves what he does and considers his profession a hobby. Mr Bean’s trading philosophy is not to make predictions or to pick market tops and bottoms but to trade the current price and moment in time using his time tested trading systems and algorithms in the commodities and futures markets. The methods are very short term in nature and are designed to first manage risk and then to achieve above average returns.
