Carl Bee
Just over 10 years ago, little known DJ & Producer Carl Bee launched the ‘Bee Expedition’ – a weekly radio show and iTunes podcast – along with a new monthly party called ‘Gringos’ at Malta’s famous open air venue ‘Uno Village’.
Possessing a diverse sonic palette, each week Carl would seamlessly support the likes of Green Velvet, Dubfire, Nic Fanciulli, The Martinez Brothers, Roger Sanchez and Eats Everything with his blend of deep house, minimal, melodic house, tech-house and techno.
He rapidly gained the respect of his illustrious guests, and it wasn’t long before Carl had records signed to Carl Cox’s prestigious label ‘Intec’.
Since then he has gained support for his tracks from techno titans Adam Beyer, Carl Cox and Joseph Capriati. However, not one to be limited to a single genre, Carl has established himself as a talented tech-house producer too, breaking into Beatport’s Top 20 Tech House Chart and receiving plenty of airtime on BBC Radio 1 from Danny Howard, Pete Tong and Annie Mac.

Lessons:
1. Drums & Bass
Using the drum samples, Carl Bee starts to carve a loop to make his own rhythms. He uses Sub Boom Bass to create a bassline played in 1/16th notes.
2. Chords & Groove :
Stating that he is not a keyboard player, Carl shows us how he uses the Chord Trigger MIDI effect in Logic. Along with the Retro Synth plugin, he begins to write out chords for the track. Carl then starts to work with Ultrabeat to write in hat patterns.
3. Strings & Leads:
Using Alchemy to create a string pattern. Carl explains how to chop a loop up into a MIDI playable instrument making it easier to tweak and manipulate. He creates the lead sound using Arturia’s Prophet V software synthesizer.
4. Recap :
Recapping on all the parts Carl has produced for this track, so far working with a kick drum, hats, strings, chords, bass and a sampled effect.
5. Percussion :
Carl looks at flex timing shaker loops and adds in an additional hat to add pace to the track. He uses LFOTool to shape the volume of the loop.
6. Mid Range Sounds :
Using Alchemy again to create a lead sound, Carl goes on with the arrangement which he states helps him decide what other sounds are needed, He answers a question on how long the breakdown should be, and how he created a unique sound for himself.
7. Break & Build :
Using automation processes to create an interesting build. Carl implements his send channels to create tension and release in the track. Using a reverb bus, single band EQ automation and a pitch effect on the arp, using Waves SoundShifter
