Be The Photojournalist You Want To Be

There is a common moral dilemma in a photojournalistic career based around the idea of the person you want to be and the photographer you are being paid to be. In this class, Gary Knight will walk you through his journey as a photojournalist and the choices he’s made when confronted with ethical dilemmas that changed the course of his career. For budding photojournalists or the ones who are re-evaluating their careers, this class will cover: 

• How to build and adapt your career as your interests change over time 
• How to deal with the darkest and lightest moments you are sent to capture 
• How to stay true to yourself when hired for work in complex environments 

Gary Knight’s career spans over three decades, he’ll discuss some of his first assignments photographing Khmer Rouge in Cambodia through his time with the hills tribes of Zomia in 2016.  

GARY KNIGHT

Gary  is founder and principal architect of the VII Photo Agency; founder of the Program for Narrative & Documentary Practice at the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University where he teaches a course in nonfiction storytelling, co-founder of the GroundTruth Project at WGBH, and is a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Frontline Club, London; Chairman of the VII Photo Agency Board,  a Canon Ambassador, twice Chair and President of the World Press Photo Award; a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a distinguished and highly awarded photographer.

Gary’s photography career began in Southeast Asia in 1988. Since then he has worked for many of the world’s leading print media during a 20 year career as a journalist and photographer in over 90 countries on every continent. He was a contract photographer for Newsweek Magazine from 1999 until 2009 and covered most of the world’s most important news stories including the wars in Cambodia, Burma, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Congo and Israel-Palestine. Since 2008 he has worked on documentary and anthropological storytelling projects in collaboration with scholars and academics from his studio at Tufts University.

Gary has won many international peer reviewed awards and honors for his work which is in private and institutional collections worldwide and has been exhibited many times, including at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The International Center of Photography, New York; Le Louvre, Paris and Scavi Scalgieri, Verona.
