Exploring the Essential Features of “Introduction to the Mulligan Concept – Brian Folk, Brian Mulligan & Richard Crowell”
Introduction to the Mulligan Concept
We are very excited to offer this introductory glimpse into the practical application of Brian Mulliganβs mobilization with movement approach to musculoskeletal problems.
Description
We are very excited to offer this introductory glimpse into the practical application of Brian Mulliganβs mobilization with movement approach to musculoskeletal problems. The techniques will be described and demonstrated by Brian Mulligan, Rick Crowell and Brian Folk of the Mulligan Concept Teachers Association. The techniques include Mobilization with Movement (MWM), NAGs, SNAGs, home exercise techniques and taping. The treatment of common shoulder, lumbar, thoracic, cervical, hip, knee and ankle problems will be offered. The guidelines and indications necessary to apply the techniques are presented in an engaging verbal and visual format. The intended result is immediate enhancement of assessment and treatment skills applicable to spinal and extremity joints utilizing Mobilization with Movement techniques.

Learning Goals
Upon completion of this class, you should be able to:
- Summarize the concept of Mobilization with Movement (MWM) along with its technique guidelines
- Describe MWM techniques for the various parts of the body including hand, forearm, shoulder, neck, spine, knee, ankle, and foot
Behavioral Objectives
Upon completion of this class, you should be able to:
Unit 1 β Overview
- Provide informed consent by describing one Mulligan
- Concept of Mobilization with movement technique to a patient with a joint dysfunction.
Unit 2 β Principles and Guidelines
- Evaluate the potential presence of 1 positional fault in a patient with a joint dysfunction.
- Communicate 3, key guidelines that are to be expected of an MWM prior to performing a technique on a patient with a joint dysfunction. Β
Unit 3 β MWM β Techniques for the Wrist
- Perform 1 Mulligan, MWM technique, with correct hand placement to improve ROM in a patient with pain and dysfunction in the wrist joint. Β
- Apply one taping technique to maintain proper radiocarpal joint alignment following a MWM in a patient with wrist pain and dysfunction.
Unit 4 β Cervical SNAGS
- Demonstrate 2 SNAG techniques in the cervical spine to improve ROM and decrease pain in a patient with cervical dysfunction.
- Instruct a patient in 1, self -SNAG technique to include in the HEP of a patient with cervical dysfunction.
Unit 5 β NAGS/RNAGS
- Apply 1 NAG technique with correct hand placement in a patient with multi-directional cervical motion loss. Β
- Demonstrate a RNAG in the upper thoracic spine for a patient with pain and loss of motion. Β
Unit 6 β MWM Techniques for the Elbow and Shoulder
- Incorporate 1, MWM Belt technique, at the elbow joint in the rehabilitation program of a patient with elbow ROM loss.
- Demonstrate 2 different MWMβs (with or without a belt) in a patient with pain at the AC joint. Β Β
Unit 7 β MWM Techniques for Ankle Sprains
- Demonstrate 1 MWM of the distal fibula in the treatment of a patient with a lateral ankle sprain.
- Apply 1 taping technique to maintain a pain free glide at the distal fibular joint in a patient with lateral ankle sprains.
Unit 8 β MWM Techniques for Stiff Ankles
- Incorporate 1, MWM belt technique to improve Dorsiflexion ROM in a patient recovering from immobilization of the ankle joint. Β
- Demonstrate 1 MWM technique at the ankle joint in a patient with limited plantarflexion ROM.
Unit 9 β MWM Techniques for the Hip and Knee
- Demonstrate 1 weight bearing and 1 non-weight bearing MWM technique in a patient with a loss of knee flexion ROM.
- Incorporate 1 taping strategy to eliminate pain in a patient with knee pain.
- Demonstrate 2, MWM belt techniques to improve ROM in a patient with hip pain/loss of ROM. Β
Unit 10 β Lumbar and Thoracic SNAGS Part I
- Demonstrate 1 SNAG technique for the lumbar spine in a patient with low back pain and loss of ROM.
- Demonstrate the use of a belt in 1 SNAG technique for the lumbar spine in a patient with low back pain and loss of ROM.
- Instruct a patient with low back pain with 1 self- SNAG technique to add to their HEP. Β
Unit 11 β Lumbar and Thoracic SNAGS Part II
- Demonstrate 1 prone SNAG with correct hand placement in a patient with a painful loss of extension ROM.
- Instruct a patient with a loss of lumbar flexion in the Lion Technique to add to their HEP. Β
- Apply 1 Central SNAG technique to the thoracic spine in a patient with a loss of thoracic mobility.
