CLASS DESCRIPTION
Getting A Handle On The Technical Parts Of Podcasting
For those just starting out in the world of podcasting, post-production is often the most intimidating aspect. The technology and tools can seem overly complex to those who are more focused on creative storytelling, especially if they have little experience with audio and editing.
Jim Briggs, lead sound designer and engineer for “Reveal,” offers this comprehensive overview of the post-production process to take the mystery out of audio editing and mixing. He’ll help you get familiar with the key terms and concepts in the post-production workflow, setting up your workspace, and navigating and managing edit and mix sessions, so you feel comfortable and confident with this critical phase of podcasting.
In this class, you’ll learn how to:
- Understand the story flow, from green light to mix.
- Evaluate and gather the essential tools you need.
- Use templates, tracks, repetition, and mixer functions.
- Look at frequency, waveform, and stereo.
- Create good collaborative and organizational practices for audio.
JIM BRIGGS

A composer and musician, Briggs writes much of the musical score for the public radio show and podcast and leads Reveal’s efforts in composition for data sonification and live Reveal performances. Prior to joining Reveal in 2014, Briggs mixed and recorded for many public radio programs and podcasts, including “Marketplace,” “Selected Shorts,” “Death, Sex & Money,” “The Longest Shortest Time,” NPR’s “Ask Me Another,” “Radiolab,” “Freakonomics Radio” and “Soundcheck.” He was also the sound re-recording mixer and sound editor for several PBS television documentaries, including “American Experience: Walt Whitman” and “The Supreme Court” miniseries. His music credits include albums by R.E.M., Paul Simon and Kelly Clarkson. Briggs won an Emmy Award in 2016, and was part of the team that won the Dart Award for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma for its work on WNYC’s hourlong documentary special, “Living 9/11.” Recent projects have been recognized with a Dupont Award as well as several national Murrow Awards. He has taught sound, radio and music production at the university level and has a master’s degree in media studies from The New School.
