Latasha James
You could say I’ve dabbled. I’ve worked in-house for companies like Kelly Services and General Motors, freelance for startups like Octoly and Interact, and founded my own multi-six-figure creative agency that serves clients across the globe today.
I’ve taken all of these varied experiences and created curriculum that touches upon multiple verticals and disciplines. My goal is for SMMA to give you a glimpse into all of your career possibilities, from corporate to freelance work, platform management to content creation.
Here’s a look at some of the work I’ve done throughout my career:
Early Days
I got a B.A. in Film, Video, & Media Studies from Western Michigan University. I didn’t learn a whole lot about marketing there, but my passion for creating videos taught me a lot about the Internet (thanks, YouTube!)
While in school, I interned at the Kalamazoo Promise, the largest place-based scholarship of its kind. There, I managed our Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as helped with email, events, and video creation.
During these years, I also worked with various political candidates and orgs on their social media strategies, plus took on a handful of freelance clients including local author Bonnie Jo Campbell and education startup Degreed.
Corporate Vibes
My first job out of college was as a contract Marketing Support Advisor in General Motors’ Chat Lab. The title probably sounds a little fancier than it was, but I sure did learn a ton about customer support through digital channels.
I then worked at Kelly Services’ global headquarters. Kelly is one of the world’s top staffing companies, and for several years I was their Social Media Community Manager. I ended my tenure as their Paid Ads Strategist.
At Kelly, my team and I were recognized 3x as a Most Socially Engaged Staffing Agency by LinkedIn, and I was responsible for managing hundreds of social media campaigns, both paid and organic.
Freelance Life
My first long-term client was a Paris-based influencer marketing startup called Octoly. I was responsible for leading the U.S. marketing team and creating the overall marketing strategy, which included social, content (blogging), email, and events. Octoly was acquired by Skeepers in 2021. 🎉
Since then, I’ve worked with dozens of brands in a variety of social-first roles, from platform management to brand strategy. Some of my past clients include: Interact, Crowd Content, Tap Bio, Marple, and many more.
I’ve also hosted an award-winning podcast for over 5 years and created courses for LinkedIn Learning and GreenFig, the latter of which is taught at universities across the United States.
My experience has gotten me invited to speak at events like Social Media Marketing World, Detroit Startup Week, HoneyBook’s Partner Summit, Digital Summit, and more.
