If we don’t know each other yet, I’m Josh Turner.
Today, I’m a Wall Street Journal best-selling author, and founder of a rapidly growing business called LinkedSelling. See, my dad owned a small remodeling company – and for the most part he was very successful. Back then, at age 22, I was about to graduate from college and join Dad in the company full-time.
Also back then, I had no clue about the terrifying ups and downs of the Cash Flow Rollercoaster.
My parents worked very hard and made sure I was taken care of, regardless of whatever ups or downs the business was experiencing at any given time. We had cars, boats, vacations – the whole nine yards. I had a fantastic, worry-free childhood.
When I started college, I began helping my dad in nearly every area of the business. I learned to estimate jobs, I worked with subcontractors, managed some projects, and helped with sales and marketing.
I loved it, and I couldn’t wait to join him full time. This business was the cornerstone of all the amazing plans I had for the rest of my life.
His business always appeared to be growing steadily. He always had projects and clients. One year we even reached $1 million in revenue!
JUST WHEN EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE, I HEARD IT COMING.

It seemed like steady growth. Until Dad called me into his office one day in 2002, I had no idea that we were approaching the peak of a HUGE drop on the Cash Flow Rollercoaster.
He explained that the opportunities were drying up and we didn’t have enough money coming in. The debt and other payables were getting out of control, and, as hard as he had fought to keep things afloat, the hole was just too big to fill back up again.
My dad looked me in the eye and told me he had no choice. He was going to have to shut the door to his business, and with it the door to the future I had banked on. Everything I had planned on was gone in an instant. I was more than devastated.
But you know what? In of moments of absolute peril, the determined find ways to move ahead and not only survive… but THRIVE.
I promised myself then and there that when I had my own business, I’d make sure, come hell or high water, that what happened to my dad’s business would NEVER happen to mine.
When I finally went full-time working for myself in 2010, I set out to build a system that would do just that. A simple step-by-step system to consistently generate appointments and opportunities.
Then I tested it, improved it, and tested it again to be sure it was as effective. And you know what? It worked.
We began sharing these same strategies with some of our clients – and without exception, every one of them who followed our step-by-step process started generating a steady stream of appointments anytime they needed them.

Why this is so different than what every other “social media” program teaches.
When I first started my business in 2010, I was working as an outsourced CFO for small businesses in St. Louis. At the time, I didn’t have much money so traditional advertising and marketing wasn’t an option. So I did what most small business owners do and I began trying all the things that everybody says you should do.
I was going to networking events and having lots of coffees and lunches, but none of it was getting me in front of real clients. And none of it was leading to real business.
At the same time, I was also trying all of the different online strategies that the gurus tell us to do. Blogging, content marketing, and even “social media.” But I found that these things didn’t work for me either.
I was spending time putting together content and publishing updates on Facebook and Twitter, but none of it was moving the needle. The “spray and pray” strategy was dead on arrival. And it still is to this day.
My first 6 months in business were tough. I was fortunate to have signed 1 client that allowed me to keep the lights on. There were a lot of sleepless nights, wondering if I had made the right decision to work for myself. I knew that I had to change something. So I scrapped what all the so called gurus were recommending, and decided to do things differently.
I started by simply connecting with targeted prospects. Once I knew WHO I wanted to do business with, I started researching where these people could be found, and what kinds of interests they have. This initial research is what we now call The Foundation of the Booked system.

I’m not sure how current you are on the topic of fleas, but bear with me here.
Fleas, in case you didn’t know, are olympic-caliber jumpers. They can jump crazy high for such tiny little insects.
You may have read before that if you put fleas in a jar with a lid on it, the fleas will jump as high as they can and knock their heads against the lid of the jar.

After hitting their heads over and over again on the lid of the jar, the fleas become conditioned to jump only as high as the lid so they can avoid being hurt over and over again.
