Lessons:
1. EQ & Saturation In The Effect Rack
Considering the acapella being a female vox, Rob shares his EQ techniques for treating the main vocal channel. Using hints of Saturation to add warmth to the channel in parallel.
2. Levels & Compression
Looking at the OTT Multiband Dynamic Compressor, Glue Compressor and a Peak Compressor from Ableton to create a tightened mix, Rob explains how each of the plugins he is using are applied subtly to make a greater overall impression.
3. Delay & Reverbs
Using the Ping Pong Delay to add movement to the vox and Reverb to give it life. Rob highlights the importance of having the Delay before the Reverb in most situations. He uses a Hall Reverb for this vocal and takes a look at what is dubbed the “Toolroom Reverb”.
4. Gating
Using Ableton’s unique Cut-O-Matic in the Audio Effect Rack (under Performance & DJ Tools). This chapter is on how to use the gate in effective ways with the help of automation.
5. Treating Bad Vocals
Using a vocal taken from a vinyl rip, Rob explains his methods to treat a badly recorded vox, using EQ, Multiband Dynamics (OTT) and Compression to make the vocal shine.
6. Audio Effect Racks
Organising your effect racks will help your workflow and organisation, keeping chains for vocals and other instruments is always useful and Rob shows us how to do this. He uses a Delay Repeater setting and plugins like Push Button Bang Mix Racks & and F9 Audio Racks.
