Exploring the Essential Features of “Mulligan Concept: Shoulder/Thoracic/ Spinal Mobilization with Arm Movement – Brian Folk, Rick Crowell & Brian Mulligan”
Mulligan Concept: Shoulder/Thoracic/ Spinal Mobilization with Arm Movement
We are very excited to offer this introductory glimpse into the practical application of Brian Mulligan’s mobilization with movement approach to shoulder and thoracic spine problems.
Description
We are very excited to offer this introductory glimpse into the practical application of Brian Mulligan’s mobilization with movement approach to shoulder and thoracic spine problems. The techniques will be described and demonstrated by Brian Mulligan, Rick Crowell and Brian Folk of the Mulligan Concept Teachers Association. The techniques include Mobilization with Movement (MWM), Reverse NAGs, and SNAGs. The guidelines and indications necessary to apply the techniques are presented in an engaging verbal and visual format. The intended result is immediate enhancement of assessment and treatment skills utilizing Mobilization with Movement techniques.

Learning Goals
Upon completion of this class, you should be able to:
- Summarize the concept of Mobilization with Movement (MWM) along with its technique guidelines
- Describe MWM techniques for the shoulder and thoracic spine
Behavioral Objectives
Unit 1 – Basic Concepts
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to develop a protocol utilizing the MWM technique for the glenohumeral joint for a patient with a painful arc.
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to explain the meaning of the acronym “PILL” when using Mulligan’s MWM for patients with extremity pain.
Unit 2 – Shoulder MWM with Belt
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to design a protocol that includes the use of a mobilization belt when performing the MWM in a patient with shoulder pain.
Unit 3 – AC Joint
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to design a protocol that incorporates the MWM technique in the treatment for a patient with highly localized pain at the AC Joint.
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to defend the use of the Scapulothoracic technique for a patient with a positional fault of the scapula.
Unit 4 – Reverse NAGS
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to propose a reverse NAG technique for a patient with upper thoracic spine dysfunction
Unit 5 – Spinal Mobilization with Arm Movement
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to propose the MWM for a patient with shoulder pain originating from the spine
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to propose 3 potential variation in treatment applications for a patient with UE pain requiring a spinal mobilization
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to incorporate a self-spinal mobilization technique/MWM for a patient that addresses pain in the UE involving the spine
Unit 6 – Thoracic SNAGS
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to develop a protocol utilizing a SNAG for a patient with limited thoracic mobility
- Upon completion, the participant will be able to compare 2 indications for using a central SNAG versus a unilateral SNAG
