About This Course
Mixmasters production coach, Dylan aka ShadowStar, is back once again to give you a lesson on ‘resampling’ in Ableton Live. Anyone can use a sample pack or load up a preset on a synth, but to get really unique sonic results and create your own sound, you will need to understand some of the fundamentals of sound design.
There are plenty of reasons why you might want to resample audio into your productions – it is a great way to quickly print down effects, effects, edits and other changes to sounds, giving you a wide range of sound design options.
You will learn how to:
- ‘Resample’ audio – create new sounds from existing ones.Â
- Shape sounds with ADSR.Â
- Use Ableton’s Simpler, Sampler and Drum Rack to sample sounds.Â
- Use Velocity as a MIDI effect. Â
- Create your own Synths and SFX.Â
- Layer drum sounds to create texture and dimension.Â
- Build your own unique sound library.Â
- Use filtering and audio effects.Â
- Use MIDI.Â
- Record audio.
Lessons:
1. Introduction
Dylan gives you a quick rundown on what resampling is and how he is going to demonstrate it in this tutorial.
2. Resampling Melodies and Bass :
Ableton live is an excellent tool for designing sounds, known for its varied routing options that allow you to ‘resample audio’. Dylan uses samples from the Kreature sample pack as a demonstration to show you how to shape and create your own unique sounds.
3. Layering Drum Samples :
Dylan shows you how he uses resampling to ‘beef up’ his drums and bring them to life. He layers the processed resample audio with clean drum sounds to add dimension and ‘texture’. He also shows you how to cut up samples and put them into a drum rack to create interesting sounding rhythms using the Velocity MIDI Effect.
4. Creating Your Own Risers and SFX :
Dylan uses one sample from Kreatures sample pack to create a riser, impact sound and sweep. He shows you how he uses specific parts of a sample to create unique sound effects with layering and processing.
5. Recap :
Dylan challenges you to use resampling in your productions. He summarises that the basis of resampling is finding good sound sources, layering and then finally using controls to shape the sound.
6. Live Q&A :
- What is the easiest way to save your resampled sounds out of your project?
- What are the rules regarding sampling things from a commercial audio track?
